GEOGRAPHY is the study of the continents and the countries of the world. The study of geography concerns the land, the seas, the lakes, the rivers, and the cities on the earth's surface.
In this unit, you will take a look at the world. You will learn to read and understand maps, and you will read about the seven continents. Also, you will learn about climate and how it influences the way we live.

A LOOK AT THE WORLD

The earth's surface is mostly water. Almost three-fourths of the earth is covered by ocean. We divide the land areas into continents. The map on page 15 shows the seven continents: North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, and Antarctica.
If you look at a globe, you will notice that the earth is divided into two hemispheres. The continents of North America and South America are in the Western Hemisphere. Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia are in the Eastern Hemisphere. A globe shows how the earth looks in space. But you can see only one side (or one hemisphere) at a time.
People have divided the continents into countries. Some countries are very large. The Russian Federation is the largest, with an area of over 6 million square miles (6,592,800 sq. mi.). The United States is the fourth largest, after Canada and China. The smallest country is Vatican City in the middle of Rome, Italy. It is less than one square mile.
The boundaries of countries have changed over the years. New countries have taken over parts of old ones. People keep track of the boundaries between countries by making maps. There are many different kinds of maps. Some are flat, and some are round like a globe. Each one shows a different kind of information. Some show what the land is like. They show things like mountains, rivers, and lakes. Other maps might show how many people live in a certain area, or how much rain falls in different places.
Look at the map of the continents on page 15. In one corner, there is a box called the key. The key gives you the information you need to read the map. It tells you what the different lines, markings, or symbols on the map mean. For example, the heavy dotted lines on the map show you how the different land areas of the world are divided into continents. The four-pointed star shows the four directions: north, south, east, and west. The key usually also contains a scale. The scale of a map is very important. It helps you measure the distance from one place to another.
