EUROPE AND AFRICA
EUROPE. Europe is not much larger than the United States. But three times as many people live there. Its 34 countries are very small. But many of them are very powerful. France, Germany, and the United Kingdom are countries in Europe. Part of the Russian Federation is also in Europe.
Almost all of Europe is quite near the water. It has a long, jagged coastline with many good harbors for ships. Europe has mountains in the north and in the south. The central part is a rolling plain.
Even though Europe is quite far north, the winters are mild. Even in Norway, which is partly in the Arctic, the ocean does not freeze. This is because Europe is kept warm by winds blowing in from the Atlantic Ocean. Also, a warm ocean current called the Gulf Stream flows from the Gulf of Mexico to Europe.
Europe is an industrialized continent. Its mines, factories, and farms are very modern. Europe is fortunate because it has enough natural resources like coal and iron for its factories. It is also fortunate because it has rich soil and good rainfall for crops. Half the land is used for farming, and it produces almost enough food to feed its population.
AFRICA. Africa is a very large continent of over 50 countries, including Egypt, Ethiopia, Nigeria, and the Republic of South Africa. It has the world's longest river, the Nile. It also has the largest desert in the world, the Sahara. More than two fifths of Africa is desert. Two-fifths is grassland. Rain forests cover a little less than one-fifth of the land.
The climate of all of Africa is warm or hot all year. Most places get either too little or too much rain. For example, the deserts get less than ten inches of rain a year. But some places along the coast get 150 inches a year.
Most of the people live in small villages. They tend herds of animals, or they farm for a living. But in many places, the soil isn't very fertile, or there isn't enough rain. Crops are usually poor.
Africa is rich in mineral resources. Most of the world's fine diamonds and much of the world's gold come from Africa. Africa also has other rare minerals needed by industrialized countries. But many African countries do not have enough money to develop these resources fully.
